Hospital Mesa del Castillo and Nunsys: Digital Innovation in Healthcare

Together with Nunsys and Signaturit Group, Hospital Mesa del Castillo has digitalized the signing and management of clinical documents using biometric signature technology. The solution automates medical consents and reports, reduces administrative costs, and ensures full traceability and legal security, driving a more efficient and patient-centred healthcare experience.

Hospital Mesa del Castillo and Nunsys: Digital Innovation in Healthcare

Hospital Mesa del Castillo is a healthcare center located in Murcia, Spain. With over 70 years of experience and more than 30 medical and surgical specialties, it is a privately managed facility operating under agreement with the Murcia Regional Health Service. The hospital also provides care for patients from a wide range of private health insurance companies, labor and sports-related insurers, and traffic accident services.

To enhance the patient experience and digitize document management, Hospital Mesa del Castillo implemented in-person biometric signature, a solution from Validated ID, now part of Signaturit Group, in collaboration with its technology partner Nunsys, a specialist in digital transformation for the healthcare sector.

The Challenge

At Hospital Mesa del Castillo, key processes such as signing attendance confirmations, informed consents, and medical reports were still handled on paper, resulting in a high administrative burden, unnecessary costs, and legal risks related to sensitive data handling.

These documents were often not integrated with the hospital’s management system, and the involvement of multiple stakeholders —patients, doctors, insurance companies, and mutual health organizations— led to operational inefficiencies and delays in updating clinical records.

In search of a more agile and secure service, the hospital set out to find a solution that would:

  • Digitize the entire signature and document management workflow
  • Ensure compliance with GDPR and healthcare regulations
  • Eliminate paper usage and reduce administrative costs
  • Improve traceability, operational efficiency, and the patient experience

The solution

The in-person biometric signature was fully integrated with the hospital’s management system, together with Nunsys, transforming a traditionally paper-based process into a 100% digital and secure workflow. Key features include:

  • Biometric handwritten signature captured on a certified tablet and backed by a trusted third party
  • Automatic generation of attendance confirmations and digitally signed medical documents
  • Integration with Microsoft Word, enabling doctors and physiotherapists to draft reports and attach summaries of treatments, signed using the hospital’s qualified electronic seal
  • Automatic classification and archiving of documents within each patient’s medical record

This solution allowed the hospital to unify both medical and administrative processes into a single digital platform, improving operational efficiency while increasing the security and traceability of all clinical documentation. The technology integrates seamlessly into the daily routine of healthcare teams, adding value from day one.

Results and benefits

Since implementing the solution, the hospital has seen significant improvements in its operations and patient care. The digital workflow has enabled full document control in a faster, more secure, and more efficient way for healthcare professionals, insurance providers, and patients alike:

  • Legal validity and traceability of all signed documents and data processing
  • Reduced costs associated with paper and manual administrative tasks
  • Operational efficiency and full control over the documentation lifecycle
  • Real-time generation of original electronic documents for patients, doctors, and insurers
  • Improved patient experience and elimination of paper-related health risks

“This solution has allowed us not only to digitize and automate the entire document process —achieving significant cost savings— but also to add legal assurance thanks to biometric signatures and electronic certificates, fully complying with data protection regulations.” Ignacio Pérez Cuadrado, IT Manager, Hospital Mesa del Castillo

Technology driving better healthcare

This case shows how digitizing critical processes —such as the signing of consents, attendance confirmations, or medical reports— not only optimizes resources and time, but also improves the overall quality of care. In a sector where precision, traceability, and security are non-negotiable, solutions like in-person biometric signature help healthcare centers modernize their workflows and provide a more efficient, patient-focused service.
